Up until a few years ago, this shaft was open to a depth of eighty feet with water which was a further forty feet in depth. It was unclear as to the purpose of the shaft and so on the 18th of May 1986, a member of the mines group dived to the bottom of the shaft. There were no passages leading off which added to the confusion. Today it still remains a mystery and isn't recorded on the plans.
