After the bridge had been built across the vaulted chamber in the Engine shaft, work started on the recovery of the pump rod and associated machinery.

The disassembly of the 'fend off' coupling proved to be a challenging task. The bolts holding the wooden pump rods to the large fish plates gave little difficulty but the wedge piece's holding the universal coupling together had to be ground smooth before they would knock out.

It is hoped that one day some of the rod can be re-instated and connected to the Tee rocker at the head of the shaft.
