The collar of
the Welsh shaft as can be seen today amid the undergrowth. The pipe on
the left is the high pressure feed and relief valve for the Man Engine
fifty feet below. The shaft descends to 295 fathoms but the Man Engine
only worked to the 200 fathom level.
A considerable amount of work has gone into the shaft by the mines group over the years to preserve and make safe the workings below. Once, the only access point to main adit level 200 feet below, the shaft is now only used for the raising and lowering of materials. There would have been a four inch compressed air pipe and cable for winding in the divided shaft and the sheave wheel from the shaft top was found buried at adit some years ago. |
