The powder magazine was constructed in such a way as to meet the standards required by every mine in Britain at the time.

Built several hundred meters away from the workings, the structure is simply a building within four walls. The inner room was small and had a pitched roof to ensure that the gunpowder remained dry. The room contained a few shelves for the explosive powder whilst the outer wall was to contain the blast in the event of such a disaster. All of the woodwork was held together with copper nails so as not to cause any sparks if accidentally knocked. A small cupboard between the walls contained the detonators and fuse.
