Pete and Graham on the construction of platforms below the water pressure engine in the welsh shaft.

This staging in twenty eight feet in length and runs across the top of a stope.  The large vertical timber in the center is one of the lower supporting legs for the engine. The large pipe is for the exhaust water. The main feed control wheel can be seen on the left and the four inch diameter piston rod runs down the center into the shaft below.

This area was full of large boulders held in a state of compression on the edge of the shaft and had to be removed before any refit work was carried out in the shaft.
