After the upper section of the shaft had been made safe, work could commence deeper down. A large and unstable slope of deads had to be dealt with and so three sets of shuttering were fitted in the side of the shaft.

Only accessible by wire ladder and rope, the difficulty lay in having nothing to stand on initially. After the first timber had been set across the vein, all the others were much easier to fit.

Electricity was ran to the shaft and lighting was installed to the necessary parts.
